Where Learning Feels Like Living
At Hillsboro, we believe a child’s school experience should feel seamless, supportive, and rooted in both comfort and purpose. From our thoughtfully chosen location to the way our classrooms are designed, every detail reflects our commitment to giving students space to grow, explore, and feel at home. And because a child’s well-being fuels their ability to learn, we prioritize healthy habits and a nurturing environment that helps students thrive in every way.
A Convenient Location
The Hillsboro School is located close to Exits 6 and 10 on I-459, and is only a 10-minute drive from the Target shopping center at Exit 10.
Our preschool campus is currently located at Grace Christian Church. While we are not a religiously-affiliated school, we are proud to partner with Grace Christian Church in our community service through helping serve in their Manna Ministries Program.
The Learning Environment
Our classrooms are intentionally designed to support student choice, focus, and collaboration. A range of seating—from traditional workspaces to soft seating and quiet study areas—allows students to select the environment that best meets their needs while still being closely supported by faculty. Inspired by the one-room schoolhouse model, our spaces promote independence within a well-structured and well-observed learning community.
We also extend learning beyond the classroom. Students participate in service projects, outdoor exploration, and interdisciplinary work throughout our campus, the Birmingham area, and on extended educational trips.
Healthy living
We take our students’ physical and cognitive well-being seriously. Stable blood sugar, proper hydration, and nutrient-dense foods directly support focus, emotional regulation, and sustained energy for learning.
For this reason, our campus is water-only. Students may bring only water to school unless a doctor has provided written guidance for a medical need. We also ask families not to send soda, juice, candy, or highly processed sugary snacks, as these can cause energy spikes and crashes that make it harder for children to learn and feel balanced throughout the day.
We encourage lunches and snacks centered on whole, fresh foods—fruits, vegetables, protein, and minimally processed options. These choices help create a consistent environment where every child can think clearly, feel steady, and develop lifelong healthy habits.
Academic Calendar
Hillsboro follows a balanced, year-round academic calendar. Instead of one long summer break, learning is distributed more evenly across the year with shorter, restorative breaks built in.
This approach is supported by research showing that:
- Shorter gaps between learning cycles reduce academic regression, especially in reading and math.
- Consistent routines support emotional regulation and lower school-related stress.
- More frequent breaks improve focus and cognitive stamina, allowing students to return to learning ready and refreshed.
- A steady rhythm of work and rest mirrors healthy developmental patterns, giving students time to deepen learning without burnout.
Our academic calendar provides an at-a-glance overview of all important dates, holidays, and milestones. Use the link below to view or download the full calendar.
A New Chapter for Hillsboro’s Campus
We have officially broken ground on our new campus — a moment eight years in the making, fueled by vision, perseverance, community, and deep gratitude. Our builder, Powers & Associates, our architect, Grant Gramstad of Paradigm Architecture, and our incredible partners at Central State Bank have worked tirelessly beside us to bring this dream into reality.
This groundbreaking marks the start of our next phase of growth, designed for purpose-built learning spaces, expanded programs, and a home to support our students for generations to come.
We’ll be keeping this page updated as we reach new building milestones, so stay tuned!

November 21, 2025
A Historic Day for The Hillsboro School! Today we officially broke ground on our new campus. In true Montessori fashion, we adults stepped aside and invited our students to lead the way. Representatives from every classroom took the first shovels of earth, symbolizing how our community of lifelong learners will shape this future home.
