Parental Involvement

Where Families Are Part of the Journey

At Hillsboro, we view education as more than academics—it’s a philosophy for life. Montessori teaches children to be independent, curious, and responsible, and we believe this approach is most effective when families are engaged and aligned with these values.

Children spend a large part of their lives within their school community, so choosing the right learning environment is crucial.

We encourage families to observe classrooms, participate in school outings, attend special events, and engage with our community. Our open-door policy allows parents to experience firsthand how Montessori principles shape daily learning and growth, and how these principles extend beyond the classroom into the habits, curiosity, and character of their children.

By partnering with families, we create a community that nurtures the whole child—intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically—while also embracing the outdoor, creative, and experiential learning valued at The Hillsboro School.

We desire for each parent to observe his or her child’s classroom. Only through seeing the children and the teachers interacting in a natural way can one begin to appreciate the environment in which the child is learning. After observations in the classroom, parents may meet with the Director and teachers to discuss any questions or details they wish to highlight.

Sharing meals is one of the ways we build community at Hillsboro. From our Thanksgiving Feast in the fall—our largest and most celebrated gathering, organized by the school but made truly special by everyone’s contributions—to other seasonal lunches and potlucks throughout the year, families come together to support each program level, with events facilitated by room parents.

These gatherings are more than just food—they’re a chance to connect, celebrate, and enjoy the collective effort of our community. From setting tables to sharing dishes, every meal becomes a joyful, collaborative experience. Breaking bread together draws us closer as members of a community committed to a shared purpose – the development of the whole child.

Upon joining our community, each family agrees to read the book, Montessori Madness by Trevor Eissler. Written by a Montessori parent for other Montessori parents, it is a quick and easy read. The book clarifies simple Montessori misperceptions and highlights how parents can expect their children to benefit from a Montessori education. Throughout the year there are opportunities to join teachers and fellow parents to explore other sources covering educational best practices.

Learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door—our students explore the world as an extension of their education. From hands-on experiences on campus and in the local community to extended excursions, field experiences are carefully designed to deepen understanding, spark curiosity, and connect students with real-world applications of their studies.

In Primary, parents often chaperone outings, helping young learners engage safely and meaningfully with their surroundings. Secondary students participate in a variety of educational experiences throughout the year, some of which are overnight trips tailored to the focus of the year’s curriculum. Every spring, our secondary students embark on a major extended trip that combines learning, adventure, and community-building.

Field experiences at Hillsboro are not just fun—they are an essential part of cultivating independent thinking, collaboration, and a lifelong love of learning.

We love for parents to share their talents and skills with students creating opportunities for meaningful interaction between students, parents, and staff. This helps to build strong relationships, foster a sense of community, and enhance student learning and development.
