A Shared Investment
At The Hillsboro School, we believe an authentic Montessori education should be accessible to families who value it and are committed to partnering with us in their child’s growth and development. We work intentionally to balance accessibility, sustainability, and shared responsibility within our school community.
Financial aid at Hillsboro is not a discount program, but a partnership—one rooted in honesty, mutual investment, and a shared belief in the value of this educational environment.
Our Philosophy on Financial Aid
The Hillsboro School offers need-based financial aid for students in grades K–12. Financial aid decisions are made with care and discretion, considering both documented financial need and a family’s demonstrated commitment to the school community.
Because Montessori education relies on continuity, trust, and long-term relationships, our goal is not simply to offer assistance—but to retain students who truly benefit from and contribute to this environment.
We ask families receiving financial support to engage in the process with transparency and integrity. In return, we commit to reviewing each application thoughtfully, compassionately, and without judgment.
Financial Aid as a Partnership
Financial aid at Hillsboro reflects a shared investment:
- Families commit to contributing to tuition to the fullest extent they reasonably can
- The school commits to stewarding resources responsibly to support students who need this environment
- Together, we prioritize continuity, stability, and the well-being of the child
We understand that financial situations are complex and not always fully captured by formulas alone. Our process allows room for context, conversation, and nuance—while also upholding fairness across the community.
How Financial Aid Is Determined
Families seeking school-based financial aid are required to complete a financial assessment through a third-party service. This provides a standardized baseline, which we then review alongside additional contextual information when needed.
Financial aid is:
- Need-based, not merit-based
- Reviewed annually
- Dependent on available funds
Submitting an application does not guarantee an award, but it ensures your family is fully considered.
Alabama CHOOSE Act – Education Savings Accounts
The Hillsboro School is an approved school under the Alabama CHOOSE Act.
The CHOOSE Act provides eligible Alabama families with Education Savings Accounts (ESAs) that may be used toward private school tuition and qualifying educational expenses, including attendance at The Hillsboro School.
Important Notes:
- CHOOSE Act eligibility and award amounts are determined by the State of Alabama
- Families must apply directly through the state’s CHOOSE Act program
- CHOOSE Act funds may be used in combination with school-based financial aid, depending on individual circumstances
- We strongly encourage families to explore this option if they believe they may qualify.
Using CHOOSE Act Funds at Hillsboro
Once approved for CHOOSE Act funding:
- Funds may be applied directly toward tuition
- Our administrative team will coordinate with families to ensure proper application of funds
- Any remaining tuition balance remains the responsibility of the family
We are happy to answer logistical questions and support families in understanding how CHOOSE Act funding works alongside our internal aid process.
Applying for Financial Aid
Families interested in tuition assistance should:
- Complete the Hillsboro admissions application
- Submit a financial aid application through our designated third-party service
- Apply separately for CHOOSE Act funding (if eligible)
- Communicate openly with our admissions team if circumstances change
All financial information is treated confidentially.
A Final Note to Families
We recognize that conversations about finances can feel vulnerable. Our intention is never to create barriers or assumptions—but to cultivate trust, clarity, and shared responsibility.
If your child thrives at Hillsboro and this environment is truly the right fit, we want you to feel empowered to begin the conversation.
Please do not self-select out. We encourage families to ask questions, apply, and allow us to walk through the process together.
