Curriculum

Designed to Help Every Child Thrive

The Hillsboro School offers a Montessori-based curriculum for students from infant through high school, designed to support the academic, social, and emotional development of each child. Learning takes place within carefully prepared environments that encourage curiosity, independence, and deep engagement.

Students are challenged to grow to their full potential while being supported at their individual pace. Personal interests are honored and nurtured, allowing students to explore topics in depth while continuing to develop across all academic areas. As students mature, they may pursue advanced coursework, including AP exams or early college classes through partnerships with area colleges, as part of their individualized learning path.

How Our Curriculum is Different

From infancy through high school, The Hillsboro School places the student at the center of all instruction. Rooted in Montessori philosophy, our curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning, critical thinking, and real-world application rather than rote memorization or standardized pacing.

Students engage in a comprehensive core curriculum while also pursuing areas of interest through choice, project-based learning, and guided exploration. In addition to core subjects, students participate in Fine Arts and Spanish, which are integrated intentionally into the school day.

With close faculty guidance, supervision, and mentorship, each student progresses at a pace that reflects their readiness and strengths. This individualized approach fosters confidence, intrinsic motivation, and a genuine love of learning.

Humanities at The Hillsboro School integrate history, literature, geography, civics, philosophy, and cultural studies to help students understand the human story and their place within it. Grounded in the Montessori Cosmic Education framework, students explore how societies develop, how ideas shape the world, and how individual actions impact communities over time.

Through reading, writing, discussion, primary source analysis, and project-based research, students learn to think critically, communicate thoughtfully, and engage with diverse perspectives. As students mature, humanities studies deepen into ethical reasoning, civic responsibility, and global awareness—preparing them to participate meaningfully in an interconnected world.

In alignment with Montessori philosophy, The Hillsboro School emphasizes integrated learning across all STEAM disciplines—science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics. Multi-age classrooms foster collaboration, confidence, and mastery as students learn alongside peers at different stages of development.

STEAM learning at Hillsboro is hands-on, inquiry-driven, and rooted in real-world problem solving. Students also develop essential life skills, including conflict resolution and healthy communication, which are intentionally taught and practiced within the classroom community.

Our program prioritizes independent learning supported by strong mentorship relationships with faculty, mirroring the types of learning environments students will encounter in higher education and beyond.

Fine Arts at The Hillsboro School include visual art, music, art appreciation, and art history, offering students both creative expression and cultural understanding. Students engage in hands-on studio experiences while also studying influential artists, musical traditions, historical movements, and the role of the arts across cultures and time periods.

Instruction emphasizes skill development, creative exploration, and thoughtful reflection. As students progress, they deepen their understanding of artistic techniques, materials, and processes while learning to analyze and interpret artistic works. Studio practice is balanced with observation, discussion, and historical context, allowing students to connect creative work to broader human expression.

Through Fine Arts, students develop confidence, imagination, discipline, and problem-solving skills, essential qualities that support innovation, communication, and lifelong learning.

The Hillsboro School’s Spanish immersion program, offered from preschool through high school, provides students with the opportunity to acquire Spanish naturally while developing strong academic and Montessori-based skills. Through immersive language experiences, students build bilingualism with an emphasis on correct pronunciation and phonetics.

Spanish learning is woven into daily classroom activities and real-life experiences. Students use the language in meaningful contexts—such as gardening, cooking Latin American dishes, participating in community service projects, and interacting with peers, allowing language acquisition to grow organically and purposefully.
